‘Over my dead body’: Kapil Sibal says he can never think of joining BJP, slams Jitin Prasada

Kapil Sibal, a prominent member of the group of 23 congressional leaders who wrote to party leader Sonia Gandhi last year to request an organizational overhaul, slammed the signatory on Thursday Jitin Prasada for transitioning to BJP and said it was a policy of “prasada” or personal gain.

The veteran congressional leader also hypothetically said that if his party considers him “dead wood” or of no use he might consider leaving but would never join the BJP, claiming that such a move would only be “over my corpse” could take place. .

In an interview with PTIsaid Sibal when Jitin Prasada would have left the party was unhappy with the leadership’s response to the writers’ concerns that it would have been his personal choice and he was entitled to leave, but wondered why he had chosen to join the BJP.

“What is the rational basis for that other than ‘Prasada [personal gain] Politics … We see this happening across the country, “Sibal claimed.

When asked about the unimplemented reforms that he had requested along with 22 other party leaders, Sibal said that this was a matter for top political leaders and that he had no comments to make at this point.

“As long as we are in Congress and continue to embrace its ideology, I think that all of us 22 of us now that we are 22, and many others who were not part of the signed document, will continue to raise our issues to Congress as well wherever we want the party to be the big old party it was, “he said.

“And if at any point you tell me you don’t need me, I’ll decide what to do, but like I said, I’m not going to join the BJP … because of my body,” the senior congressional chair said.

Will Prasada get ‘prasada’? Asks Sibal

In a previous tweet, Sibal had said the question was receives Jitin Prasada “prasada” from the BJP, or is he just a “catch” for UP elections.

If “ideology” doesn’t matter, making the switch on deals like this is easy, he tweeted.

Sibal slammed Jitin Prasada’s move to the BJP and welcomed the Saffron Party and told PTI that the norm in politics now is “Prasada will do Prasada”.

“From Aaya Ram Gaya Ram we are in ‘prasada (personal gain) policy’. We saw this recently in West Bengal where crowds left the TMC and joined the BJP in the hopes of getting a BJP ticket compete and win because Amit Shah claimed 200 plus for the BJP. When they faced defeat, they all wanted to return to TMC, “Sibal said.

“Aaya Ram Gaya Ram” was a widespread expression in politics in the 1990s that refers to frequent changes of corridor and party.

“No concept of principled politics in this country”

Sibal said that all of this shows that there is no concept of principled politics in this country, as seen in West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, among others.

“It’s all about Prasada. How much Prasada you’re going to get, no regard for ideology. My criticism of what he [Jitin] has done is not that he left the party; I can’t criticize him for that, it’s his personal choice … but how does he justify himself joining the BJP, “he said.

“This is a party, him [Jitin] abused for decades. He himself said that his association with Congress and its ideology lasted for several decades. How does he then justify joining an ideology that he has rejected for three decades? “Asked Sibal.

The former union minister said what worried him was the way ideology was being put aside across the country. He cited the example of Haryana and the lack of any justification in the coalition of the Chautalas and the BJP. It’s just lust for power, he claimed.

Expressing his point of view, Sibal cited the example of the US and UK, saying the Republicans might be in trouble right now, but they would not join the Democrats in America, and the same was true for the Labor Party and Conservatives in Britain.

“Members of the parliaments in Europe do not indulge in such acrobatic changes for personal gain. These are also functioning democracies. Democracy in this country has become dysfunctional because it is not based on ideology,” said Sibal.

“Would never join BJP”

The struggle for power should be based on the clash of ideologies and not on personal “prasadas,” he said.

When asked if he could ever think of leaving the party he has been in for decades, Sibal said: “If the party thinks that I have no value for it, I might think of leaving it, but I would never join the BJP am committed to a certain ideology “.

“Politics is not for personal gain, it includes ideologies that members of a party believe not just because of a Rajya Sabha seat or position in the party or any other position. That is not my idea of politics,” he said.

Expressing concern about the increasing trend for leaders to switch between diametrically opposed ideologies, Sibal said the other real problem is that when people look at politicians with this behavior, they believe that these politicians are untrustworthy and unprincipled and have no ideology.

This has nothing to do with value-based politics. If workers see their leaders throwing value-based politics overboard, they too will, Sibal argued.

“That weakens the foundations of democracy, people’s trust in democratic principles and if the foundations of democracy are weakened, the structure will one day collapse,” he said. Sibal also criticized the BJP for welcoming the “Prasada policy”. His actions are equally unprincipled, he added.
