Filmmaker Aysha Sulthana was booked by Lakshadweep police for sedition after a BJP leader complained that she had spread false news about the spread of Covid-19 in Union territory during a televised debate.
According to the FIR filed by the Kavaratti Police Department, filmmaker Aysha Sulthana has been registered under Sections 124 A (riot) and 153 B (hate speech) of the Indian Criminal Code.
Aysha Sulthana is from the island of Chetiath in Lakshadweep. The Lakshadweep-based model and actor has worked with several Malayalam filmmakers.
Why was a complaint filed against Aysha Sulthana?
The complaint against filmmaker Aysha Sulthana was filed by the President of the BJP’s Lakshadweep Unit, Abdul Khader.
In his complaint filed with Kavaratti police on Wednesday, the BJP leader said Sulthana alleged during a debate on a Malayalam television station that the central government used biological weapons to spread Covid-19 in Lakshadweep.
“Lakshadweep had 0 cases of Covid-19. Now it is reporting a daily increase of 100 cases. What the center used is a bioweapon. I can clearly say that the central government used biological weapons, ”Aysha allegedly said.
In his complaint, the BJP leader alleged that Sulthana’s act was an anti-national act that tarnished the “patriotic image” of the central government.
Aysha Sulthana wrote on Facebook that she was being prosecuted for sedition. “FIR has been registered. However, only the truth counts. The BJP leader who filed the complaint is from Lakshadweep. As he continues to betray his homeland, I will keep fighting for it. Tomorrow those who betrayed will be isolated, ”said Aysha Sulthana.
“To the people of Lakshadweep: The sea protects you and you protect the sea. The betrayed are afraid, but we are not. I did not raise my voice to be silent when it was weakened. My voice will be louder from now on, ”she wrote.
Protests in Lakshadweep
The BJP protested in the islands on Thursday to take action against the filmmaker.
