As the second wave of Covid-19 subsided, most northern and western states have decided to cautiously lift lockdown restrictions. On the previous Saturday, Delhi further eased some curbs while Maharashtra worked out a five-step plan to unlock it. However, high numbers of cases are still reported from the southern and eastern parts of the country, leading Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to extend the lockdown for another week.
Here’s a look at which states have eased restrictions and which states have chosen to keep curbs.
NEW DELHI
In the state capital, where the “activation” process began on May 31, the Delhi Metro is running at 50 percent capacity and markets and malls will open odd-even from June 7th.
The lockdown in Delhi, which was due to end at 5 a.m. on Monday, will be extended further, but several easings are allowed, Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal said.
Government and private offices are allowed to reopen with 50 percent participation. Markets and shopping centers are allowed to open odd-even from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
MAHARASHTRA
Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray has extended lockdown-like restrictions in the state through June 15although they will be relaxed from June 7th. The state will implement a five-step curb easing plan based on the weekly Covid positivity rate and the occupancy of oxygen beds in the districts.
Cities and counties with a positivity rate of less than five percent and an oxygen bed occupancy of less than 25 percent will open up completely.
In other cities and districts, restrictions remain in place to varying degrees. In locations with a positivity rate greater than 20 percent and an oxygen bed capacity greater than 75 percent, only the most important stores will stay open until 4 p.m. and office visits will be 15 percent.
UTTAR PRADESH
Yogi Adityanath’s government has announced the easing of the coronavirus curfew in Bareilly and Bulandshahr counties starting June 7, allowing shops and markets outside the containment zones to open five days a week.
That brings the number of counties where restrictions have been eased as the number of active cases fell below the 600 mark to 67 out of 75 counties.
The nightly curfew and weekend lockdown will continue in the state.
WEST BENGAL
Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee extended the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions until June 15.
It is planned that from June 15, shopping centers with a capacity of 25 percent and retail stores will be able to open for an additional hour.
The government only allowed restaurants in the state to operate for three hours in the evening if the employees of those restaurants and bars get vaccinated first.
PUNJAB
Lockdown-style curbs will remain in effect in Punjab through June 10.
On Saturday, the state reported 1,907 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the number to 5,77,997, while 79 more deaths brought the number to 15,009.
Tamil Nadu
Prime Minister MK Stalin announced the extension of the lockdown by one week to June 14th with some easing of restrictions from Monday.
The state identified 11 hotspot areas – Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Tanjore, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai – where restrictions continue due to the high rate of infection.
KARNATAKA
The lockdown will remain in effect in the state until June 14.
Karnataka registered 13,800 new Covid cases and 365 deaths on Friday, according to the state health department. The capital Bengaluru remained the hardest hit district with 2,686 cases and 206 deaths.
KERALA
The LDF government has extended the lockdown until June 9th with some concessions.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday directed the state health authorities to ensure that all over 40s are vaccinated by July 15.
MADHYA PRADESH
The state has extended the corona curfew with relaxed restrictions until June 15. He announced separate unblocking policies for districts.
Madhya Pradesh reported 718 new coronavirus cases and 38 deaths on Saturday.
Meanwhile, around 3,000 interns across the state continued on strike, urging the government to increase their fellowship.
GUJARAT
The nightly curfew in 36 cities across the state has been extended by a week from June 4, with schedules further eased.
BIHAR
The state, which has been on lockdown since May 5th, extended the lockdown to June 8th.
The number of active cases fell below 10,000 and the recovery rate soared 97.9 percent on Saturday as 1,007 new cases and 21 deaths were reported.
ODISHA AND JHARKHAND
Jharkhand has extended the lockdown until June 10th.
The lockdown will remain in effect in Odisha until June 17th.
RAJASTHAN
Ashok Gehlot’s government began the “unblocking process” by relaxing certain restrictions from June 2nd.
ANDHRA PRADESH AND TELANGANA
Telangana has extended the lockdown to June 9th.
Andhra Pradesh extended the curfew until June 10th.
HIMACHAL PRADESH AND GOA
Both states extended the corona curfew until April 14.
In Goa, Shops selling essential items are allowed to operate daily between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Himachal Pradesh had previously loosened the curbsincluding those relating to the opening of shops, restaurants and pubs.
HARYANA AND SIKKIM
Both states will maintain lockdown restrictions until June 7th. Haryana has announced the easing of some curbs.
JAMMU & KASHMIR
The government has eased restrictions, but the night curfew and weekend lockdown remain in place. The state has reported 25 Covid deaths and 1,448 new cases in the past 24 hours.
ASSAM
The BJP-ruled state extended the restrictions until June 15, but increased the curfew by an hour on June 4.
MEGHALAYA and TRIPURA
The lockdown in the worst-hit East Khasi Hills district has been extended to June 7th.
The Tripura government has put corona curfew in Agartala Municipal Corporation’s areas and urban areas of the state through Nov.
MIZORAM
The state has extended the lockdown in Aizawl and other district headquarters until June 6th.
MANIPUR and NAGALAND
The government of Manipur has put a curfew in seven districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Ukhrul, Thoubal, Kakching and Churachandpur until June 11th.
Nagaland has extended the lockdown until June 11th.
ARUNACHAL PRADESH
The state has completely locked the Anjaw, Dibang Valley, Lower Subansiri, Lohit, and Tawang counties and the Capital Complex Region through June 7.
UTTARAKHAND
The state extended the Covid curfew until June 8.
CHHATTISGARH
On May 31, the government extended the lockdown until further orders were issued.
UNION AREAS
Puducherry has imposed a lockdown until June 7th.
The Lakshadweep government extended the lockdown until June 10th.
