Some states extend lockdowns, others relax curbs as India witnesses drop in Covid cases


India is seeing a steady decline in new confirmed cases of Covid-19 every day. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are now 10,26,159 active cases across the country.

The coronavirus has claimed a total of 370,384 lives in India since the pandemic began last year. At the same time, 95.26 percent of all patients diagnosed with the infection have recovered to date.

With most states seeing a decline in Covid cases and deaths, the restrictions put in place to break the chain of transmission are gradually being lifted. Most states / UTs imposed lock-like restrictions in May this year amid a surge in infection cases.

While the Odisha government will likely begin Gradual loosening of the curbs from June 17thIn Telangana, Jharkhand and Nagaland, the bans have been extended until further notice.

Here’s a look at how other states / UTs are unlocked:

New Delhi

In a press conference, Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal said that churches in the capital may reopen from Monday, but visitors are not allowed for the time being. Restaurants can also be operated with 50 percent of the seating capacity.

Shopping malls in Delhi are now open every day the week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. In the case of weekly markets, only one weekly market is permitted per municipality area.

Salons, beauty salons and barber shops in the state capital have also received permission to reopen.

In the meantime, schools, colleges and coaching institutes in Delhi will remain closed until June 21st. The same goes for gyms, spas, swimming pools, banquet halls, amusement parks, movie theaters, theaters and public parks in the capital.

Tamil Nadu

Restrictions were in at least 27. relaxed Districts of Tamil Nadu. At the same time, strict restrictions continue to be enforced in 11 districts of the state where the case load is higher.

Restaurants, bakeries, tea shops, and public parks in the state have been given permission to reopen.

State liquor stores (TASMACs) and salons in Tamil Nadu will also resume operations on Monday.

Places of worship and tourist attractions remain closed, said Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin.

Karnataka

In Karnataka the state government has SOPs for the reopening of public parks and industrial facilities.

Restrictions have been eased in all but 11 counties, where the number of cases is high.

Jammu and Kashmir

Eight districts of Jammu and Kashmir – Shopian, Kulgam, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Poonch, Reasi, Ramban and Doda – decided to loosen the curbs. The decision was made in light of the decrease in total weekly new cases (per million) and the positivity rate, among other things.

Haryana

In Haryana, the Covid-19 lockdown has been extended to June 21.

While the state government has opted for an odd number of stores to be reopened, gyms, sports complexes and stadiums are also allowed to reopen as long as they adhere to strict protocols.

Assam

Government workers in Assam who received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been asked to report to their respective offices starting Monday.

A partial lockdown will remain in place across the state of Assam.

Madhya Pradesh

The upper limit for attending a wedding in Madhya Pradesh has been revised. A total of 40 people can now attend a wedding in the state, said CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Reopening gyms in the country is also being considered. A final decision in this regard is still pending.

Goa

The Goa government extended the nationwide curfew on Sunday to break the chain of transmission until June 21st. The state’s positivity rate is now 14 percent, an official said.

Punjab

Shops selling non-essential items are now allowed to stay open until 6:00 p.m. in Punjab.
