Tamil Nadu lockdown extended till July 5; curbs eased in Chennai, other districts


The Tamil Nadu government on Friday extended the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown in the state through July 5, with several easings in Chennai and its neighboring counties.

Continuing the tiered system announced last week, the government has allowed the opening of shopping malls, jewelry stores, textile showrooms and places of worship in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur that have been placed under the Tier 3 category.

What is allowed

-While textile and jewelry showrooms with 50 percent occupancy can be open until 7:00 p.m., shopping centers without air conditioning can stay open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. .

– While private facilities can function with a 100 percent workforce, the beaches will be open to hikers from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

– Cinemas and restaurants remain closed, only take-away and delivery services are allowed.

– Temples, churches and mosques can also reopen.

Districts divided into 3 levels

The state government has divided the districts into three categories according to the number of cases in the last few days and at the same time announced certain easing.

Teir-1 includes 11 districts in which no additional easing was planned, as the active case number remains high. These include Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Thiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.

The lockdown, which came into force on May 10, was initially in force for two weeks, but has been extended several times. It was June 20th extended until June 28th

Tamil Nadu has recorded over 5,700 new cases in the past 24 hours

On Friday, Tamil Nadu registered 5,755 new Covid-19 cases and 150 deaths, according to the latest health bulletin. The cumulative number of Covid-19 infections has risen to 2,455,332 and the total death toll has risen to 32,051.

There were also 8,132 discharges, bringing the total recovery to 2,375,963.
