Top priority to strengthen grassroots of democracy in J&K, says PM Modi after crucial meet


Our priority is to strengthen grassroots democracy in J&K, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi after meeting 14 heads of state and government of the former state to determine the future course of action.

Prime Minister Modi also said on Twitter that the demarcation must come “at a fast pace” for elections to take place and for J&K to have an elected government that strengthens its “development path”.

“Our priority is to strengthen grassroots democracy in J&K. The demarcation has to be done quickly so that polls can take place and J&K gets an elected government that strengthens J & K’s development path, ”said Prime Minister Modi in a tweet.

“The greatest strength of our democracy is the ability to sit down at a table and exchange opinions. I have told the leaders of J&K that it is the people, especially the youth, who have to lead J&K politically and ensure that their aspirations are properly fulfilled. ”PM Modi said in another tweet after the three and a half hour meeting.

Thursday’s meeting marked the first interaction between central leadership and J & K’s mainstream parties since August 5, 2019, when the center revoked the powers of Article 370 of the Constitution, stripped the former state of its special status and divided it into union territories. – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The decisive meeting

The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi on Thursday was attended by 14 heads of state or government, including four former prime ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, to discuss future action in the Union’s territory.

The meeting lasted three and a half hours.

Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by Union Interior Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, received the leaders of eight parties, including the National Conference, the PDP, the BJP and the Congress, at his residence.

Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh, Main Secretary of PM, PK Mishra, and Union Interior Minister Ajay Bhalla were among the participants of the meeting.

The four former prime ministers of the former state who attended the meeting were: Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad of Congress and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

Four former Deputy Prime Ministers – Tara Chand from Congress, Chairman of the People’s Conference Muzaffar Hussain Baig, and Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta from the BJP – were also present.

The CPI-M chief Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami, the head of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), Altaf Bukhari, Sajjad Lone from the People’s Conference, the JK congress leader GA Mir, BJPs Ravinder Raina and the chairman of the Panthers party Bhim Singh were also part of the delegation.

Everything that was discussed in the meeting

According to official information, the main focus of the meeting was on strengthening the democratic process. Prime Minister Modi stressed that holding assembly elections as well as successfully running the district development council elections is a priority and that the elections can take place soon after the demarcation exercise, the sources said, adding that, by and large, most attendees at the meeting voiced their opinion Willingness to do so.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister also said that an atmosphere of security must be ensured for all segments of society in Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi said he wanted to “remove”Dilli ki duri as well as ‘Dil Ki Duri’ (Removal from Delhi as well as removal of the heart), said the above sources.
