India captain Virat Kohli echoed head coach Ravi Shastri’s views on the best of three WTC finals to determine future test world champions, saying he doesn’t think one game is enough to determine the best test team in the world.
Kohli’s comments came after India lost 8 wickets to New Zealand in the ICC WTC final in Southampton, but said the result didn’t matter in his opinion. Kohli believes future iterations of the tournament maker should be at least a best-of-three series.
“I don’t quite agree with choosing the best test team in the world over the course of a game,” said Kohli after his team lost eight wickets in Southampton.
“If it’s a test series, it has to be a character test over three tests – which team has the ability to get back on the series or completely blow the other team away. Pressure cannot be applied for just two days. ”From good cricket and then suddenly you are no longer a good test site. I do not believe that.”
Kohli believes that a multi-game final would also capture the essence of test cricket much better than a one-off showdown.
“I think it has to be hard work and something that definitely needs to be worked on in the future, to really be – at the end of three games there is effort, there are ups and downs, there are situations that evolve as the game progresses to change.” Series…
“… A chance to correct the things you did wrong in the first game and then really see who is the better side over the course of a three-game series or something like that will be a good measure of that how things really are. ‘Kohli claimed the loss to New Zealand was not a true reflection of their performance over the two-year WTC cycle.
‘… So this result doesn’t bother us too much because, as I said, we understand as a test page what we’ve done in the last three or four years, not just in the last 18 months, but in the last three or four Years.
“So this is not a measure of who we are as a team and what skills and potential we have had for so many years.” Planning a best-of-three final amid a busy international calendar will be a major challenge for the ICC in the future. Kohli said a highly competitive series is much more remembered than a single competition.
“I think that definitely has to be brought in. I’m not saying this because we’re not on the winning side, just so that Test cricket and this saga will be absolutely unforgettable.
“I think it has to happen over at least three games for you to remember a streak because there will be ups and downs where two good teams will meet and know there is so much at stake. ” ,’ he added.
