HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bad lighting forced the referees to end the game early on Day 2 in Southampton
  • India scored 146 for 3 of 64.4 overs (Virat Kohli 44 *, Ajinkya Rahane 29 *)
  • Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner each picked up a wicket for New Zealand New

India captain Virat Kohli led from the front, taking on a rebuilding job for his team on Saturday that took them to 146 for 3 before bad light played Spoilers New Zealand on day two of the first World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane added 58 runs for the 4th wicket as the duo went undefeated in Stumps on Day 2. Kohli really stood out for his control in bowler-friendly conditions at the Rose Bowl. Notably, poor light and rain forced early stumps as only 64.4 overs were thrown as the game was paused twice after tea before it was finally abandoned.

WTC FINAL DAY 2: HIGHLIGHTS

After persistent rain washed out the entire opening day on Friday, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the litter and decided to bowl against India under an overcast sky. Both teams held on to their strengths, India both chose their spinners – Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – and New Zealand opted for a seam attack.

Rohit-Gill in a solid opening stand

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill negated the moving ball by standing outside the goal line to share a 62-run opening stand. Both Indian openers left a solid 62-run opening stand in the morning session when Rohit Sharma picked up a wide shipment from Kyle Jamieson and put them on the second slip for 34 while Shubman Gill picked up one from Neil Wagner to BJ Watling for 28.

India’s testing specialist Cheteshwar Pujara took 36 balls to cross the finish line and was hit on the helmet grill by a rising shipment that made his neck protector fly. Pujara scored eight runs before Trent Boult swung one back to catch the lbw.

Kohli-Rahane Reconstruction for India

Kohli was unbeaten at Tea at 35, along with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane to rebuild and stabilize his team after the early departures of Rohit, Gill and Pujara. Looking less than convincing against the moving ball, Rahane hit 13 when the fading light forced an early tea break.

Due to the persistently poor light in Southampton, only 9 overs were thrown in the last session, with Rahane reaching three limits to remain unbeaten at 29, while Kohli failed to fail at 44.
