While the second wave of Covid-19 has been relentless in most parts of India, some pockets have managed to escape the wrath of the virus. The Isha Foundation Ashram in Tamil Nadus Coimbatore has managed with thousands of volunteers to fight the spread of the disease along with 43 nearby villages. But how did you do it?
With the western region of Tamil Nadu seeing a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Isha Ashram in Coimbatore with over 3,000 volunteers has remained untouched. Residents believe this is due to their self-imposed strict lockout protocols.
Ma Jayitri, Isha Yoga Center’s administrative coordinator, told India Today TV, “For the past year or two we have been following the protocols very carefully. We have prevented all guests from entering the premises. All outdoor activities have been too shortened. “
“We have reorganized the ashram … if you don’t wear a mask you have to hold a board and stand for two hours as a punishment,” she added.
Apart from this, preventive measures such as regular temperature checks, disinfection and social distancing are mandatory in the ashram even if inmates continue to do their daily chores such as yoga sessions, cooking, gardening, farming, writing content, graphic design and composing music.
LIKE YOGA, CLEAN FOOD, AYURVEDA ISHA VOLUNTEERS STRENGTHENS
The ashram has also developed strategies to keep the volunteers fit and healthy during these times. Volunteers regularly practice a three minute yoga practice called “Simha Kriya” This is said to strengthen the lung capacity and the immune system.
Volunteers also claim that their clean eating habits helped them keep the virus at bay. “The food we have here is Satvik food … mostly raw vegetables and fruits twice a day,” said Dr. Suman, the medical coordinator at Isha Yoga Ashram.

Ma Jayitri told India Today TV about the daily routine of the ashram volunteers: “We start our day at 4:30 am with neem leaves and a scoop of turmeric with a glass of warm water. We also have an Ayurvedic drink called ‘Nilvembu Kashayam ‘ twice a day on an empty stomach. “
NEAR VILLAGES ALSO USE
The ashram volunteers have shared some of their wisdom with 43 villages nearby. The surrounding areas have reported a relatively low number of cases, although Coimbatore city limits have seen an unprecedented increase in cases.
Panchayat boss Sadanandam Booluvampatty said: “There are hardly any cases in the 13 hamlets here. Nobody goes out, only a few people go to get the bare minimum and come back.”
Volunteers at the ashram feed almost a lakh in the surrounding 43 villages with the famous kashayam, a mixture of 15 herbs, and teach them some yoga practices and sensitize them to Covid protocols.

“We look after 90,000 people every day. We convey the meaning of Covid protocols in a unique way. We use loudspeakers to convey the message and to speak to them in their national language,” says Swami Nakuja, a volunteer at the Isha Ashram.
“Every day at 11 o’clock [Isha volunteers] Serve us Kashayam. It kept us in good health. It helped us fight coughs and colds, “a local told India Today TV.
Strict adherence to a simple lifestyle has managed to protect the Isha Ashram and the surrounding villages from the onslaught of Covid-19.
