30 years apart, Jyotiraditya Scindia heads ministry his father Madhavrao held

As a great reward for delivering Madhya Pradesh to the BJP at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in India, Jyotiraditya Scindia was inducted into his Council of Ministers by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

In the late evening, Jyotiraditya was Scindia has allocated its portfolio: Civil Aviation. His father, Madhavrao Scindia, was Minister of Civil Aviation in the PV Narasimha Rao government.

Madhavrao Scindia held the civil aviation and tourism portfolios of the Rao government from 1991 to 1993.

These were crucial years for India’s politics and economy as the country embraced liberalization. The Covid-19 pandemic has made Jyotiraditya’s assumption of the civil aviation ministry role just as significant.

Both leaders had already served as Union Ministers before assuming leadership of the Civil Aviation Ministry. Madhavrao had served as rail minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government. Jyotiraditya was Minister of Communications and IT in the Manmohan Singh Government. He was credited with reviving the postal service.

There is one more similarity between Madhavrao and Jyotiraditya – both are viewed by their peers as sophisticated, polite, and articulate. And while Madhavrao had worked as Jan Sangh (forerunner of the BJP) before joining Congress after the crackdown on the emergency by the Indira Gandhi regime, Jyotiraditya joined the BJP after falling out with the Gandhis of Congress.

However, Jyotiraditya Scindia would like the commonality with his father to end here in her political career. Because Madhavrao Scindia had a hard time as Minister of Civil Aviation.

His hopes of replicating the success of his tenure as railroad minister – including the introduction of the Shatabdi Express trains – were dashed in the face of relentless agitation by Indian Airlines staff.

Finally, Madhavrao Scindia resigned as Minister of Civil Aviation after a plane crash that left no one dead. It could potentially be a unique example of resigning as Union Minister.

Jyotiraditya Scindia took over the Ministry of Civil Aviation at a difficult time for the sector. The monthly report published in May of this year (the last available) showed a decrease in passenger traffic from January to April of over 13 percent this year compared to the same period last year.

The turnaround in the civil aviation sector, a task that Madhavrao Scindia could not complete, would be more challenging for Jyotiraditya Scindia. It could be a real test for Jyotiraditya Scindia if he follows in his father’s footsteps.
