In a joint statement on July 3, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced their divorce, describing it as “the beginning of a new journey”. Before Kiran Rao, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta for 16 years from 1986 to 2002.
Aamir tied the knot with Kiran Rao in December 2005 and would complete 16 years of their marriage that year. Aamir’s marriage to Kiran Rao and Reena Dutta lasted 16 years each.

Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were neighbors. During a 1999 interview, Aamir had said that he followed Reena Dutta quite a lot, but she kept refusing. When Aamir finally lost hope of the situation, Reena approached him and confessed her feelings for him.
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta married on April 18, 1986. They have two children, son Junaid and daughter Ira. In December 2002, Aamir Khan filed for divorce from Reena Dutta.

Aamir Khan met Kiran Rao on the set his 2001 film Lagaan, where she worked as an assistant director for the film. After his divorce from Reena Dutta in 2002, Aamir met Kiran again. During his interview, Aamir had said that Kiran called him after his divorce and they both had a nice chat and found that he felt “happy” afterwards.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao began dating shortly thereafter and also lived together for some time before they got married on December 28, 2005. Their son Azad was born in 2011 to a surrogate mother.

We started a planned separation some time ago and now we feel comfortable formalizing this arrangement, living separately and sharing our lives like an extended family.
