Several All India leaders Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and nearly 3,500 others were charged with violating the Covid-19 protocol on Tuesday in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu.
The AIADMK leaders took part in a protest against the DMK government led by MK Stalin in the state.
Under the leadership of the former minister CV Shanmugam, the AIDMK organized a massive protest in Villupuram. It was organized against the decision of the state government not to implement the proposal of the previous AIADMK government to establish Jayalalithaa University in memory of the former Prime Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK head J Jayalalithaa.
Thousands had gathered for the protest, which was held in complete disregard for Covid-19 protocols such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.
Police said they had filed a case against CV Shanmugam and 3,500 others for participating in the protest and disregarding the Covid-19 protocol.
The massive protest took place at a time when Covid-19 cases are on the rise again in some parts of the country and Experts warn of a third wave in the wake of new variants of the virus that causes Covid-19.
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu reported 1,767 new Covid-19 cases, 2,312 recoveries and 29 deaths.
That brings the total number of infections in the state to 25,52,049, while the number stands at 33,966. Tamil Nadu had 22,188 active cases as of Tuesday.
