A long-standing border dispute between Assam and Mizoram broke out into new violence on Monday. Central forces are now stationed in the area to bring the situation under control and prevent further incidents.
That last clash was the culmination of Tension simmers between locals from Lailapur village in the Cachar district of Assam and neighboring Vairengte village in Kolasib district in Mizoram. Another attempt by Assam police to attack is believed to have contributed to the tension.
Only earlier this week, Union Interior Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting of Prime Ministers of all northeastern states in Shillong to discuss border disputes, among other things. Previously, Interior Minister Ajay Bhalla had called a meeting of the chief secretaries and DGPs of Assam and Mizoram to settle the border dispute.
