Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent 2,600 kg of mangoes as a gift for Prime Minister Modi and West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, reports say. The shipment with 260 boxes of the famous “Haribhanga” mangoes in Bangladesh trucks crossed the border on Sunday afternoon.

Haribhanga mango, grown in Bangladesh’s Rangpur district, was sent across the land border via the Benapole checkpoint, a Bangladeshi news agency reported. The gift comes at a time when Dhaka is a little dismayed by the Delay in delivery of second doses of vaccine to Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent the fruits of the season in a warm gesture as a “souvenir of friendship between the two countries,” said Anupam Chakma, Benapole’s deputy customs commissioner.

On the other hand, Mohammed Samiul Quader, the first secretary of the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Calcutta, accepted the mangoes.

After all customs and port formalities have been completed, the gift package is reported to be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Bangladeshi media reported that Hasina planned to send mangoes to prime ministers in the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura, all of which border Bangladesh.
