The Union’s Ministry of the Interior has extended the validity of the Covid-19 guidelines to August 31 and has called on states to take “the strictest possible measures” in districts with a high positivity rate.

The positivity rate is the percentage of samples that test positive for a disease out of the total number of samples tested. A high positivity rate indicates a greater spread of a disease in a given population.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has written a letter to all states and UTs saying that despite the declining number of Covid-19 cases, there is “no room for complacency” in adhering to the Covid-19 protocol are.

The letter also instructs states / UTs to ensure behavior appropriate to Covid in all crowded places, especially with regard to upcoming festivals.

“As the number of active cases declines, states and UTs are gradually resuming their activities. While the decrease in the number of cases is a matter of satisfaction, it can be stated that the absolute case numbers are still significantly high. Hence there is no room for complacency and the process of easing restrictions should be carefully calibrated, “said Ajay Bhalla in his letter to the secretaries of state.

The letter warns states of the recurrence of Covid-19 cases and says the reproductive number of the virus, commonly known as the “R” factor, is hovering just below 1 but is high in some states.

“Every effort should be made to ensure that the ‘R’ factor is not increased. In addition, the strictest possible measures should be taken in the districts that still have high positivity rates, ”it said.

“In view of the upcoming festivals, Covid-appropriate behavior must be ensured in all overcrowded places. The focus should continuously be on the five-fold strategy for effective management of Covid-19, i.e. test-track-treat vaccination and compliance with Covid-appropriate behavior, “said the interior minister.

He added that strict instructions should be given to the district and any other affected local authorities to take the necessary measures to deal with Covid-19.

“The officials concerned should be made personally responsible for any negligence in the strict enforcement of Covid-appropriate behavior.”
