Harsh Vardhan Shringla said the principles of humanitarian law existed in India long before the development of modern humanitarian law.

India has followed the path of “Dharma” or “righteous conduct” and has offered refuge to persecuted people for centuries.

“While international humanitarian law as we see it today has its origins in the recent past, civilizations and cultures throughout history have developed rules of warfare to protect non-combatants and the civilian population,” he said, adding that the world today is embroiled in a number of humanitarian crises.

Meanwhile, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also expressed his grief over the murder of the Danish Siddiqui.

“As I extend my condolences to Siddiqui’s family and our media family, I reaffirm my government’s unwavering commitment to freedom of expression and the protection of free media and journalists,” said Ghani.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who had a reporting assignment with the Afghan special forces, was killed on Friday in clashes between security forces and Taliban fighters in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.

His body was reportedly handed over by the Taliban to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Friday.
