Congress high command forcibly interfering in Punjab politics: Amarinder Singh writes to Sonia Gandhi

The Prime Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, sent an angry letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday, saying that the party’s high command was “violently” disrupting the work of the country’s government and state politics.

Sources privy to the contents of the letter have told India Today TV that Captain Amarinder Sigh has clearly expressed his dissatisfaction and anger over the apparent change of party appoints his rival Navjot Singh Sidhu as President of the Punjab Congress.

In his letter to Sonia Gandhi, the Punjab Prime Minister reportedly said that the party’s high command should understand the prevailing situation in Punjab, which is not favorable for a change in leadership.

“The party and the government may both have to face the consequences of such a move,” Captain Amarinder Singh reportedly wrote.

He is reported to have informed the Congress leadership that developments will have a negative impact on the outlook for Congress as the party is confused and at a crossroads.

SIDHU MEETS SONIA GANDHI

Earlier in the day, Navjot Singh Sidhu met Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi. This meeting comes ahead of the party’s Punjab unity renewal and amid reports that Sidhu may play a key role in the organization.

After the meeting, Punjab Congress Party leader Harish Rawat said that Sonia Gandhi does not have to make a final decision on the issue and that he will announce it soon after the meeting.

When asked if a decision had been made to appoint Sidhu as president of the Punjab Congress, Rawat said, “Who said that?”
“I came here to take my note on Punjab to the chief of Congress, and as soon as the president of Congress makes a decision, I’ll come and share it with you,” Rawat said.

“Please read my statement very carefully and try to understand the words and their meanings,” he also said when asked about his previous comments on Sidhu, which indicated that he was getting a bigger role.

RAWAT TO VISIT CHANDIGARH ON SATURDAY

Meanwhile, the Congress leadership has asked the party’s Punjab leader Harish Rawat to go to Chandigarh as envoy on Saturday. Rawat is likely to meet Captain Amarinder Singh. Sources say he could discuss the reshuffle in the Punjab cabinet with him.

On the flip side, supporters of Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday began with strong indications that the High Command of Congress will decide in his favor to celebrate and distribute candy at his home in Patiala.

However, leaders near Sidhu have asked his supporters to wait a little longer for the Congress party to make a formal announcement related to Sidhu’s appointment as president of the Punjab Congress.

Sources in the Punjab Congress say reports of Sidhus followers celebrating in advance, too upset Captain Amarinder Singh.
