Lionel Messi’s Argentine beat Brazil 1-0 in Sunday’s Copa America final. Di Maria claimed victory midway through the first half when he overwhelmed Ederson after full-back Renan Lodi failed to make a long through pass.

Messi’s international title drought is finally over and Argentine teammates surround him on the sidelines as a chorus of boos descends from the Maracanã stand. https://publish.twitter.com/?query=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FCopaAmerica%2Fstatus%2F1414042936833200128&widget=Tweet

As the game ended, a tearful Messi was tossed in the air by some of his cheerful teammates.

It was only the third goal that Brazil conceded in the tournament. Neymar tried dribbles and passes, but the Selecao barely threatened Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Coach Tite’s team had won the last five Copa America games and scored in all goals.

Messi’s performance in the final wasn’t as impressive as in previous games in the tournament where he scored four goals and provided five assists. He had a clear chance in the 88th minute and tried to dribble Ederson, but the Brazilian goalkeeper stopped him.

The title does, however, provide the superstar with some relief after all the questions raised during his career about his effectiveness in the national team.
