Tourists planning to visit Mussoorie from outside Uttarakhand now require a negative RT-PCR Covid-19 test report, the local administration said on Friday.

The development comes at a time when numerous unruly tourists have flocked to the north Indian hill stations since the government relaxed the Covid-19 guidelines.

After Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand opened their gates to people from other states, large groups of maskless tourists can be seen daily throwing social distancing norms to the wind.

Therefore, in order to comply with the protocols, the Mussoorie administration has mandated arriving travelers to book their accommodation online by producing a negative Covid-19 report.

“As summer peaks, tourists are coming to Mussoorie in large numbers. But they are defying the guidelines caused by Covid-19. Masked roaming and non-compliance with social distancing have become normal,” said Narendra Pant, a Mussoorie police officer.

“The administration has therefore decided to take a strong approach and make online booking of hotels with a negative Covid-19 report compulsory. Anyone without a negative report is not allowed to enter Mussoorie, ”he added.

Meanwhile, most tourists seem hesitant about the pandemic. While hoping others will wear masks and keep social distance, not many are willing to do the same on their own.

“I love it here in Mussoorie. People should put on their masks and follow social distancing standards,” said Simran from Punjab. When asked why she wasn’t wearing a mask herself, however, she refused to speak.
