Covid-19: Recovered patients contracting TB, say doctors in Madhya Pradesh

Doctors in Madhya Pradesh have noted a sudden surge in tuberculosis cases in patients with a recent history of Covid-19. They said several patients fell ill with tuberculosis days after recovering from Covid-19.

Covid-19 is a viral disease caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, while tuberculosis, or TB, is a bacterial infection. However, both diseases often affect the lungs and respiratory system.

Dr. Lokendra Dave, the director of the medical department at Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, said most of the new tuberculosis patients had a recent history of coronavirus.

He said: “An unusually large number of people who test positive for tuberculosis have a history of coronavirus. This is a fact, but beyond that, nothing can be conclusively said at this point whether it is a direct result of coronavirus and is the following. ” Treatments given to these patients. “

In the outpatient department (OPD) of Hamidia Hospital, which is part of Gandhi Medical College, around a dozen patients test positive for tuberculosis every day.

At Bhopal State TB Hospital, most of the patients admitted in the past 15 days are those who have recovered from Covid-19.

One of them is 15 year old Vibha. She had tested positive for Covid-19 during the second wave. According to Vibha’s mother, no one in the family has a history of tuberculosis.

“My daughter tested positive for corona and we somehow managed to save her with the help of prescribed drugs, including remdesivir, but now she has been tested for TB,” she said.

Dr. Akash Mangole, who is treating Vibha at the TB hospital, said many patients recovered from Covid are infected with tuberculosis.

“Many new TB patients who are also showing symptoms have survived corona and their ejection test confirmed tuberculosis, and this is certainly serious, if not alarming,” said Dr.

No survey or study was conducted in Madhya Pradesh to determine the extent of tuberculosis prevalence among those recovering from Covid. But the doctors advise people to be on their guard.

Dr. Dave said, “The coronavirus was so prevalent during the second wave that many people suffering from various diseases were reluctant to go to hospitals, which were full of advice to people who are showing symptoms is to get tested.”

Dr. Gopi Krishna Yeslapati, an interventional pulmonologist consultant at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, said the second wave had seen an increase in fungal infections and tuberculosis cases in Covid-recovered patients.

“But the good thing is that those diagnosed with TB will be cured,” said Dr. Yeslapati.

Dr. Gopi Krishna said: “When we examine the sputum, we see a significant number of patients with tuberculosis infections. In some patient groups at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, we use a special examination technique to diagnose TB (drug-resistant TB). Against fungi through bronchoscopy, an endoscopic technique to get an accurate diagnosis. “

“But my personal experience shows that these patients diagnosed with TB heal well compared to fungal infections,” said Dr. Gopi Krishna.
