Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of the World Health Organization – Southeast Asia, said Monday that the delta variant of the coronavirus will soon become the world’s dominant strain of Covid-19.

“The delta variant of the coronavirus has now spread to more than a hundred countries. As it spreads, it will soon become the dominant strain in the world,” she said. The Delta variant has reportedly reached the UK, US, Singapore and many other nations.

According to a Reuters report The US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said earlier this week that the Delta variant was now “the world’s dominant variant”.

DELTA DISTRIBUTES FAST

Dr. WHO’s Poonam Khetrapal Singh also said the Delta variant is the fastest spreading of all of the worrying variants.

In the same direction Dr. NK Arora said Monday that the Delta variant is around 40-60 percent more transferable than its predecessor, the alpha variant. Dr. NK Arora is co-chair of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

Dr. Arora: “The Delta variant has mutations in its spike protein that help it bind more tightly to the ACE2 receptors present on the surface of cells, making it more transmissible and more capable of evading the body’s immunity . “

The Delta variant was first identified in India last October. It is Bprobably mainly responsible for the second wave in the country, which accounts for over 80 percent of Covid-19 cases. It originated in Maharashtra and traveled north along the western states of the country before invading the central and eastern states.
