Facebook ‘prank’ goes wrong as Kerala woman abandons baby for online friend, relatives behind it end life

In January, a newborn baby was found in a pile of dry leaves in the Kollam district of Kerala. The infant later died in a hospital.

A police investigation into the incident uncovered a prank among relatives that went horribly wrong and resulted in the loss of three lives, one of which was a baby a few hours old.

THE CASE

The infant’s mother, Reshma, from Kalluvathukkal Village, Kollam, was arrested in June in connection with the death of the newborn.

Police targeted Reshma by collecting DNA samples from women in the area, according to a report in The Indian Express.

During interrogation, Reshma told police that she let her newborn baby die to run away with a man she’d befriended on Facebook but never met in person.

According to the police, she had not told her husband Vishnu or any other member of her family that she was pregnant.

During their investigation to find out the woman’s Facebook friend, police called two of her relatives, her sister-in-law Arya and niece Greeshma, for interrogation.

Police called her when Reshma was using a mobile SIM card in Arya’s name to operate one of her multiple Facebook accounts.

THE TWIST IN THE CASE

In a strange twist of events, the two women allegedly died of suicide after jumping into a river the day after being summoned.

Police then questioned a friend of Greeshma’s, who revealed that she had told him that she and Arya had created an Anandu’s Facebook account to prank Reshma.

Police also found that Arya had told her mother-in-law about the prank before she allegedly committed suicide.

However, Arya’s husband said he had no idea about the prank.

Reshma has since been taken into custody at a quarantine center. The police said that she had tested positive for Covid-19.
