IMD forecasts heavy rainfall over western and central India, issues red alert for Mumbai


The western and central parts of the country will continue to experience heavy rains for the next three to four days, the IMD said on Wednesday when it issued a “red” warning for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rains in the country’s financial capital.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued an “orange” warning for the East Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, which includes districts such as Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Yavatmal, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy showers.

However, rainfall intensity over northern India is likely to decrease after 24 hours, the Met office said.

IMD warnings are color-coded from green to red. A “green” alarm means “no warning” and the forecast is from light to moderate rain. A “red” alarm stands for “warning” and calls on the authorities to “intervene”. An “orange” warning indicates that the authorities are expected to be “prepared”.

MAHARASHTRA

An IMD press release stated that “there is a cyclonic circulation over the northwest bay of Bengal, extending between 3.1 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level and sloping southwest with altitude”.

“Under his influence, a low pressure area will very likely form over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the surrounding area in the next 48 hours. Therefore, the monsoons are expected to remain active over Vidarbha from July 21-23, ”he added.

Nagpur, the largest city in the Vidarbha region, recorded 25.6mm of precipitation in 24 hours to 5:30 p.m.

The Marathwada region of Maharasthra is also expected to see widespread showers through Thursday and the intensity of rain is likely to decrease thereafter, the IMD said, adding that there is an offshore trough running between Maharashtra and Karnataka that generally carries wet westerly winds from carries the Arabian Sea to land.

GUJARAT, GOA

Over the west coast, the adjacent interior areas and the Gujarat region, extensive rainfalls with occasional heavy to very heavy rains are likely to continue over the next four to five days, the IMD announced.

Even over Konkan, Goa and the adjacent Ghat areas in the center of Maharashtra, isolated extremely heavy rains can be expected from July 21 to 22.

HEADQUARTERS, EAST INDIA

Fairly widespread to widespread rains, with isolated heavy to very heavy falls, are likely over east and central India from July 21 to 24, the Met office said, adding that there will be isolated extremely heavy rains from July 21 to 22 also over the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely, and over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and eastern Madhya Pradesh on July 22nd.

NORTHERN INDIA
