India at Tokyo 2020 Day 5 Live Updates: All eyes on PV Sindhu, high hopes from Deepika Kumari and Pooja Rani

The Indian contingent had to go through another disappointing day at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the shooters and badminton players resumed their somber show at the Summer Games on Tuesday.

Much was expected of the rifle line-up, which included stars such as Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Abhishek Verma, among others. But no one was able to meet expectations, even though they were in good individual form in the run-up to the Olympic Games.

Table tennis and badminton were the other two sporting events that fans had pinned their hopes on, but even those hopes went down the drain.

Boxer Lovlina Borgohain and the Indian men’s hockey team win were, in a nutshell, the only two positive points for the nation on an otherwise dismal Day 4 at the Games.

Lovlina Borgohain, the first female boxer from Assam to take part in the Olympic Games, put on a sovereign performance against the experienced German pugilist Nadine Apetz in the Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday.

With the victory through a split decision over the senior boxer, Lovlina moved into the quarterfinals of the welterweight division of women (64 to 69 kg). She is now only one win away from winning a medal for India. The semi-finalists are guaranteed at least a bronze medal in sport at the games.

Lovlina will meet former world champion and fourth-placed Chen Nien-Chin in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Welter on July 30th. A win there will help her get on the podium regardless of what happens in the semifinals.

Drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh scored a brace after Simranjeet Singh gave India the lead in the 14th minute, sealing an important win for the team. On Thursday the Indians will play against the reigning Olympic champion Argentina. Continue reading
