The Indian naval ship Airavat with five cryo-containers with 100 MT liquid oxygen and 300 concentrators reached Indonesia on Saturday to support the country in the fight against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar tweeted: “Fight against Covid together. INS Airavat has now reached Indonesia and transported 300 oxygen concentrators and 100 MT liquid medical oxygen (LMO). ”
The ship should reach the port earlier, but its arrival was delayed, EAM Jaishankar announced on Monday.
INS Airavat is a Landing Ship Tank (Large) type of ship with a primary role in conducting amphibious operations and capable of carrying multiple tanks, amphibious vehicles, and other military cargo. The ship is also used for HADR relief missions and was part of various relief efforts across the Indian Ocean.
When India suffered from the severe second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in May, Indonesia had sent 1,400 oxygen concentrators into the country through the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS).
Indonesia is facing extreme oxygen shortages in hospitals as Covid-19 cases spread rapidly in the country. On Friday, Indonesia reported over 49,000 daily cases, bringing the total number of cases over 31 lakh.
India and Indonesia have close cultural and economic ties. Both countries have worked together on the maritime front to achieve a safer Indo-Pacific. The Marines regularly conduct joint naval exercises in the form of bilateral exercises and coordinated patrols.
