Indian-American health policy expert Meena Seshamani appointed as Medicare director


The Indian-American expert on health policy, Dr. Meena Seshamani, who led the health and human services (HHS) review team, has been named director of the US Center for Medicare.

Sheshamani, 43, will lead the center’s efforts to serve people 65 and over, people with disabilities, and those with end-stage kidney disease who are dependent on Medicare coverage.

Dr. Seshamani began serving as the Assistant Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicare on July 6th.

“Dr. Meena Seshamani brings her diverse backgrounds as a health manager, health economist, physician and health policy expert to CMS,” said Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator of CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).

“Providing quality health care to the people who depend on Medicare and promoting equity in health care like we do is a priority for CMS. I am pleased that Dr. Seshamani will bring her unique perspective on how health policies affect patients’ real lives in her leadership role as assistant administrator and director of the Center for Medicare, “she said.

Seshamani most recently served as Vice President of Clinical Care Transformation at MedStar Health, where she conceived, designed and implemented community health and value-based care initiatives and served on the management of 10 hospitals with more than 300 outpatient care facilities. it says in a press release.

The care models and service lines under her leadership, including community health, geriatrics, and palliative care, have been recognized nationally by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and others.

She also mentored patients as an assistant professor of ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, it said.

Dr. Seshamani also brings decades of political experience to her role, including recently leading the HHS agency’s review team for the Biden-Harris transition.

Prior to MedStar Health, she was director of the US Department of Health’s Office of Health Reform, where she led the strategy and implementation of the Affordable Care Act across the department, including insurance policy, health care reform, and public health policy, it said in the statement.

She received her BA with Honors in Business Administration from Brown University, her MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and her Ph.D. in Health Economics from the University of Oxford, where she was a Marshall Scholar.

She completed her specialist training in ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and practiced as a head and neck surgeon at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco.
