Jammu and Kashmiri police shot down a hexacopter drone in the Akhnoor area of Jammu district on Friday. The drone shot down 8 km within international borders.

Police also seized an improvised explosive device weighing 5 kg (IED) that was supposed to be assembled and used by terrorists, police said.

Agencies are investigating whether the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is behind the drone activities and uses this modus operandi as in previous cases for a terrorist attack.

This is not the first time a drone has been spotted in Jammu or near international borders. Since the twin explosions at Jammu Airbase on June 27th, several drones have been spotted in multiple locations in Jammu in the past month, increasing the risk of a drone attack.

Amid increased drone activity, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh recently ordered officials to remain particularly vigilant as terrorist groups are constantly trying to use drones for terrorist activities.

“Terrorist units are constantly trying to use drones for terrorist activities”, DGP Dilbag Singh is quoted by the PTI news agency.

DGP Dilbag Singh also said that all suspicious elements should be kept under control in order to thwart their attempts.
