Look forward to working closely with PM Modi: Nepal PM Sher Bahadur Deuba

Nepal’s new Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said he was looking forward to working closely with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to strengthen ties between the two neighboring countries as well as personal contacts.

Prime Minister Modi immediately congratulated Deuba after winning a vote of confidence in the reinstated House of Representatives on Sunday evening.

In a tweet, Modi said, “Congratulations Prime Minister @DeubaSherbdr and best wishes for a successful term in office. I look forward to working with you to further build our unique partnership across all sectors and to strengthen our deeply rooted human relationships. “

In response to Prime Minister Modi’s tweet, Deuba thanked his Indian counterpart for his congratulatory message and expressed his desire to work closely with him to strengthen bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.

“Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for your letter of congratulations. I look forward to working closely with you to strengthen ties between our two countries and people, ”Deuba tweeted late Sunday evening.

Deuba, the 75-year-old President of the Nepalese Congress, won a vote of confidence in the reinstated lower house and won it confidentlyto avert a general election in the Himalayan nation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deuba, who was named Prime Minister on July 12 following the intervention of the Supreme Court under Article 76 (5) of the Constitution, secured 165 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives on Sunday.

A total of 136 votes were required for Deuba to win Parliament’s confidence. He had to request a vote of confidence within a month of his appointment as prime minister. Surprisingly, however, he requested a vote of confidence on the first day the House was reinstated.

Deuba’s failure to win the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives would have resulted in the dissolution of the House of Representatives and early polls in Nepal, which is facing an unprecedented health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The result of Sunday’s vote of confidence paves the way for Prime Minister Deuba to stay in office for the next year and a half until a new parliamentary election takes place, the Nepalese media reported.
