Monsoon expected to hit Delhi on Sunday; rain, thundershowers likely

The southwest monsoon missed its date with Delhi on Saturday and is now set to hit the capital in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The weather department has forecast a cloudy sky with one or two rain showers or thunderstorms for Sunday.

The easterly winds have made conditions favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance and it will likely cover parts of northern India, including Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, in one day, it said.

“Therefore, conditions remain favorable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over Delhi, the rest of western Uttar Pradesh and some other parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan over the next 24 hours,” added the IMD.

On Friday, the weather department had forecast that the monsoon would reach the state capital on Saturday, 13 days after its usual date, June 27.

This will be the most delayed monsoon in Delhi in the past 15 years.

According to Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the IMD’s regional forecasting center, the monsoons had reached the capital on July 7, 2012 and July 9, 2006.

In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon rains on July 19. The most delayed arrival of the monsoons in the city was recorded on July 26, 1987, he said.

The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi on Saturday were 39.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, and 28.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal.

The relative humidity measured at 5:30 p.m. was 47 percent, the Met announced.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that Delhi’s Hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) was 96 at 7:05 p.m.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 as “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 as “medium”, 201 and 300 as “bad”, 301 and 400 as “very bad” and 401 and 500 as ” heavy”.
