Monsoon likely to reach Delhi around July 10; most-delayed in 15 yrs: IMD


The southwest monsoon will reach Delhi around July 10th this year, making it the most delayed in the last 15 yearsthe Indian weather agency announced on Monday.

“The monsoons are likely to advance over the rest of western Uttar Pradesh, some more parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and Delhi around July 10,” the IMD said in a statement.

The weather system is very likely to increase rainfall activity over north-west and central India from July 10, it said.

According to Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the IMD’s regional forecasting center, the monsoons had reached the capital on July 7, 2012 and July 9, 2006.

In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon rains on July 19. The city had its most delayed monsoon arrival on July 26, 1987, he said.

After arriving in Kerala two days late, the monsoons raced across the country seven to ten days earlier than normal, covering eastern, central, and adjacent northwestern India.

But then, with Conditions remain unfavorable for its advance, the monsoon weakened and entered a “pause” phase.

The weather bureau had previously predicted that the wind system could reach Delhi by June 15, which would have been 12 days earlier.

Usually the monsoons reach Delhi by June 27th and cover the entire country by July 8th. Last year, the wind system reached Delhi on June 25th and covered the entire country until June 29th.

Delhi has so far received 43.6mm of rainfall versus the normal of 75.7mm – a 42 percent shortage since the monsoon season began on June 1. Central Delhi with 89 percent less rainfall than normal is the second most rain-poor district in India after Kistwar in Jammu and Kashmir.
