What is the maximum increase in new Covid-19 cases a single district could have seen in the past few days? The answer is an astonishing 325 percent.
In the past four weeks, Covid-19 cases in Manipur’s Chandel neighborhood rose from a meager eight on June 28 to 34 on July 25 unprecedented growth rate in terms of infections that are setting the alarm bells ringing.
The northeastern states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Assam account for 13 of the 22 districts of concern due to the surge in Covid cases, a source from the Union Department of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said.
Worrying Districts in the Northeast
To the northeast, the surge continues with a 110 percent increase in Covid-19 cases in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills.
While West Siang in Arunachal Pradesh saw a 300 percent increase in cases, Noney reported a 266 percent increase in new infections in Manipur.

Similarly, Imphal (East) saw 301 cases last month, a 119.7 percent increase in cases.
Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, Dr. Randeep Guleria India Today had previously said, “People in the northeast had little immunity and when we opened up, the infections traveled to that region.”
Sero surveys by the ICMR show that Assam has a seroprevalence of 50 percent. Data for other states in the northeast is not currently available.
Worrying districts in Kerala, Maharashtra
Of the other 10 districts of concern, seven are in Kerala and three in Maharashtra.
In Kerala, Kottayam has seen new Covid-19 cases rise by nearly 64 percent in the past four weeks. The district now has 849 active cases of infection.
Malappuram, with 2,270 active cases, saw an increase of 59 percent over the same period, followed by Ernakulam with 46.5 percent and Thrissur with 45.4 percent. Malappuram remains the hardest hit district in terms of the total number of cases of infection.

Wayanad, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha also saw a surge in Covid-19 cases and are on the radar.
In Maharashtra, the Solapur district reported a 28 percent increase in newly confirmed cases of infection. The other worrying district in the state is Beed, where authorities recorded a 33 percent increase in new cases.
That said, another 54 counties in India reported a positivity rate of 10 percent or more for the week ending July 26, according to the central government.
