A Delhi-based attorney has filed a police complaint against Twitter India and its boss Manish Maheshwari, requesting the registration of an FIR allegedly disseminating communal hatred and outrageous religious sentiments by Hindus.

The complaint filed by an Aditya Singh Deshwal states that a Twitter user (Atheist Republic) has repeatedly posted “very offensive graphics / cartoons of the Hindu goddess Maa Kali”.

It is alleged that this Twitter user portrayed Maa Kali in a “heinous manner” with the intention of “insulting and degrading the Hindu religion”.

Deshwal has stated that other content tweeted by Atheist Republic indicates that it is a “deliberate attempt to deliberately incur and offend the religious sentiments of Hindus in order to promote religious hostility among the people of that country.”

“The content posted by the Twitter user is not only abusive, it was posted to cause anger, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, hostility, hatred and ill will in society,” the complaint read .

Deshwal accused Twitter of allowing such content on its platform, saying the social media giant took no steps to remove it.

“In a blatant violation of Indian law, (Twitter) behaved as an accomplice in the crime and (shows) such blasphemous and offensive content about Maa Kali,” the complaint read.

It added that Twitter “intentionally promotes hate speech” about the Hindu religion.

“Manish Maheshwari (Managing Director Twitter India) has deliberately not taken any action to remove such objectionable content from his platform even after a month has passed,” he adds.

The Delhi Police have yet to accept the complaint and, in this case, register an FIR.
