Punjab’s Prime Minister Amarinder Singh has reached the residence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi for a meeting amid the crisis in the country’s party unity.

The meeting, which took place in the midst of the bitter tug-of-war between the Punjab CM and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, is said to have been convened to give final form to the ceasefire formula to end the power struggles in the state party unit.

The Secretary General of Congress Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reportedly met Sonia Gandhi prior to her meeting with the Punjab Prime Minister.

Both Navjot Singh Sidhu and Amarinder Singh had teamed up ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. Sidhu even became Minister of Local Government, Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

However, the differences between the two became public in 2019 when Sidhu tweeted a copy of his resignation from the Punjab cabinet. The two prominent Punjab Congress leaders have since exchanged allegations with a solution to this dispute, which is nowhere in sight.

Earlier this month, Sidhu met a three-person committee formed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi to seek feedback from the party’s leaders in Punjab.

The cricketer-turned-politician met with National Secretary-General of Congress Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in New Delhi last week.
