The Met department issued an orange warning for Mumbai and neighboring Thane on Tuesday, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated locations, and a red warning for Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur and Satara districts on Wednesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the red warning indicates that “extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations in ghat areas is likely”. Extremely heavy rains mean more than 204.4 mm of precipitation in 24 hours, it said. The rain intensity is expected to decrease from Thursday, the IMD announced.

For the rest of the state, heavy rains and light to moderate showers are to be expected in isolated places, it said. The city of Mumbai received 51.5mm of rainfall Tuesday while suburbs received 54.6mm of rainfall, an IMD report said.

The coastal districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri received 135.5mm and 137.7mm of rainfall, respectively, between Monday and Tuesday. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada received moderate showers, while most of Vidarbha districts saw single-digit rainfall between Monday and Tuesday, the report said.
