Red alert issued for Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh; heavy rainfall predicted over next 72 hours


Most of the 13 districts of Uttarakhand and parts of Himachal Pradesh have been issued a red alert of heavy to very heavy rain. Development comes less than 24 hours after the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) issued a similar warning to Uttarakhand.

In a statement on Sunday, the SDRF had forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall between July 19 and July 21 in Uttarakhand.

On the orders of SDRF chief Navneet Singh Bhullar, up to 28 teams across the state were kept on standby to deal with any eventuality.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rains over Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura in the next 72 hours.

Similar predictions have been made for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh and northwest Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, northern Konkan, Bihar, and parts of western Bengal.

Heavy rain was also forecast for Parts of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla has witnessed incessant downpours for 24 hours.

Red alert has been issued for four counties in the state – Kangda, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Sirmaur. The weather agency has also issued an orange warning for the remaining eight districts of Himachal Pradesh.

A woman died on Monday when her husband and son went missing after their car fell into a ravine following a landslide in Himachal Pradesh. The incident occurred in Dunali on Bharmour Road in the Chamba district of the state.

“The western end of the monsoon valley at mean sea level continues to be close to its normal position and is likely to gradually shift northward starting July 20,” IMD said Monday.
