Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his grief over the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise and expressed condolences to his family and the Haitian people.

Prime Minister Modi tweeted: “Shocked by the assassination of President Jovenel Moise and the attack on First Lady Martine Moise of Haiti. My condolences to President Moise’s family and the people of Haiti. “

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated early Wednesday after a group of strangers attacked his home. His wife, First Lady Martine Moïse, is hospitalized.

The murder of Moise and the wounding of his wife would add even more chaos to the unstable Caribbean country already plagued by gang violence, rising inflation and protests from opposition supporters who accused Moise of increasing authoritarianism.

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the police and the military were in control of security. Haiti is the poorest country in America and has a history of dictatorships and political upheaval. The streets of Port-au-Prince were empty and silent.
