To avoid the risk of Covid-19 infection, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) general secretary Rajeev Mehta said India would send a minimum number of athletes to the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony.

“We don’t want to create a situation where our athletes are at risk of becoming infected. A meeting is currently being held to determine the exact number, but will be kept to a minimum to avoid any risk of infection,” said Rajeev Mehta opposite IndiaToday .Im.

Athletes competing the next day have already been instructed to skip the event.

10m air pistol shooters Saurabh Chaudhary, Abhishek Verma, Apurvi Chandela and Elavenil Valarivan, who have events on the first day of the competition, will shoot the ceremony along with Manu Bhaker, Yashaswini Singh Deswal, Deepak Kumar and Divyansh Singh Panwar on the second day.

The Indian team has eight rifle, five pistol and two clay pigeon shooters as well as six trainers and a physiotherapist in Tokyo.

Boxers, archers, and the men’s and women’s hockey teams will continue to compete on the day after the opening ceremony.

India has named the men’s ice hockey captain Manpreet Singh and the six-time boxing world champion MC Mary Kom as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony.

While Mary Kom won’t play the next day, Manpreet will lead the first Pool A game against New Zealand on Saturday. India will be represented by more than 125 athletes at the Games, with the total contingent being 228, including officials, coaches, other auxiliaries and substitute athletes in the face of the Covid-19.
