Tokyo Olympics: Anurag Thakur to flag off 1st batch of Indian athletes from Delhi on July 17


Indian athletes, coaches and supervisors traveling from New Delhi to the Tokyo Olympics will be officially bid farewell at Indira Gandhi International Airport by Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Minister of State, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Nisith Pramanik. later on Saturday night.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and MOS, Sports, Nisith Pramanik will send the first group of Indian athletes from Delhi to the Olympic Games in Tokyo on Saturday evening.

With the Tokyo Olympics slated to begin in a week’s time, a formal farewell ceremony is being held today at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi as the first group of athletes depart from India for Tokyo. The 88-strong contingent, which includes 54 athletes, coaches and representatives from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), will be led by Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, and Shri Nisith Pramanik, Minister for State, Ministry of Youth and Sports.

They are joined by Shri Narinder Dhruv Batra, President, IOA; Shri Rajeev Mehta, General Secretary, IOA, and Shri Sandip Pradhan, General Director of the Indian Sports Authority at the ceremony.

Athletes and supervisors in eight sports, archery, hockey, badminton, table tennis, archery, judo, gymnastics and weightlifting, will leave New Delhi today with the largest contingent of hockey.

To ensure the safety of the athletes, all dignitaries attending the event will have their COVID tests done. Only people with negative reviews will attend the event. On this occasion, too, all social distancing measures were taken.

127 Indian athletes qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which is a record, overtaking the 117 who qualified for the Rio Olympics.
