On a glorious evening, the sky above Tokyo National Stadium exploded to indigo and white as fireworks displayed the start of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

Postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers have been forced to take the unprecedented step of holding the games without fans as new cases of Covid-19 keep rising in Tokyo and outside.

The stadium opening video reconstructed Japan’s path to the games and the challenges the world has faced since the Japanese capital was chosen to host it in 2013.

The video showed how the 2020 coronavirus hit the world and the subsequent lockdown forced the unprecedented postponement just four months before the Games actually opened.

In addition to the Japanese Emperor Naruhito, who will officially open the Games like his grandfather Hirohito in 1964, and the US First Lady Jill Biden, only 15 global leaders are in attendance. Here are a few pictures from the opening ceremony.
