Katy Ledecky of the USA won the gold medal in the women’s 800m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, while Australia claimed an incredible seventh title.
Ariarne Titmus from Australia won silver and Simona Quadarella from Italy took bronze in the women’s 800 m.
It has been disappointing games so far for the US swim team, whose eight gold medals are only half the deficit from Rio, but the performances of their biggest names gave them cause for celebration on the penultimate day in the pool.
After losing her 200m and 400m titles to Australian Ariarne Titmus, Ledecky got her campaign back on track in Tokyo by winning the 1,500m earlier in the week and became the first swimmer to win six individual gold medals on Saturday who sailed home over half a mile.
Taking control from the start, Ledecky built her lead on Titmus from the 500 mark and came home more than a second before her Australian rival and won the event for the third year in a row – another first for the American.
“She made it hard and it was a lot of fun to race,” said Ledecky.
“I just trusted myself to pull it out and swim any way I wanted.”
