  • Yashaswini Deswal finished in 13th place and failed to reach the 8 women final
  • Indian shooters have not yet lived up to their reputation in Tokyo

Manu Bhaker missed the last berth of the 10m Air Pistol Women with a real mustache. The number 2 in the world finished the qualification with 575 points and in 12th place in the 53 women field.

World number 1, Yashaswini Deswal, finished 13th with 574 points, while the top 8 qualified. In fact, the French Celine Goberville took the last qualifying place with a score of 577 and 15X.

Manu Bhaker needed an X in her final shot, but the 19-year-old shot an 8 which eventually knocked her out of the competition. It was a difficult day for Manu as she had a technical error and didn’t even shoot for 5 minutes in her third series.

Manu Bhaker recovered well to shoot 98 in the 5th series, but she appeared to be pressed for time. The Indian contingent of shooters, which was expected to be India’s greatest hope for a medal, has so far remained empty. India had only one finalist in 3 medal competitions.

India had a disappointing day of filming on Saturday. The first possible medal event for India had no competitors like world number 1 Elavenil Valarivan, and world record holder and senior shooter Apurvi Chandela failed to reach the final of the 10m air rifle women qualification.

Saurabh Chaudhary led the 10 meter air pistol men’s qualifying round but finished seventh in the final. Abhishek Verma, number 1 in the world, did not make it to the final on Saturday.
