Tokyo Olympics: Uttar Pradesh government announces Rs 6 crore prize money for gold medal winners from state

Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced high cash rewards for athletes from the state who win medals at the Tokyo Olympics, which begin July 23.

Gold medalists in the individual category are awarded Rs 6 crore by the government, while gold medalists in team events are awarded Rs 3 crore. In addition, the government will provide Rs 10 lakh to each athlete participating in individual and team events.

About 126 athletes will travel to Tokyo to represent India at the Olympics, which have been postponed due to last year’s Covid-19 pandemic. Boxing size Mary Kom and Indian hockey captain Manpreet Singh will be the flag bearers of the contingent at the opening ceremony, while wrestling star Bajrang Punia will be the bearer of the closing ceremony.

The shooters Saurabh Chaudhary, Mairaj Khan and the javelin stars Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani are among the athletes from Uttar Pradesh who have qualified for the Olympic Games. Chaudhary, 19, is a favorite for winning a medal in the men’s 10m air pistol and the mixed team 10m air pistol where he works with Manu Bhaker.

The Tokyo Games will take place from July 23rd to August 8th.
