Amid the boom in the Union cabinet, the president appointed eight new governors on Tuesday. The major reshuffle in the run-up to the expected cabinet expansion included the appointment of Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot as governor of Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Satyadev Narayan Arya was appointed governor of Tripura and Ramesh Bais was put in charge of Jharkhand.

The Appointments were made prior to PM Modi’s cabinet expansionthat is expected this week.

Sources have told India Today that it would be a major reshuffle that could see the addition of over 20 new ministers to the cabinet. The sources said that in addition to electoral-bound Uttar Pradesh, large states like Maharashtra and West Bengal, which recently voted, could see greater representation in the Union’s cabinet.

“It will not be a small deal, it will be a major reshuffle,” sources told India Today on Tuesday. The sources added claimed that some ministers could lose their seats.

If the Prime Minister continues the exercise this week, he will expand his Council of Ministers for the second term for the first time since taking office in May 2019.

The current strength of the Council of Ministers is 53, excluding PM Modi. Its maximum strength can be 81.
