Upon return from space, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announces $100 million ‘Courage and Civility’ award


Billionaire Jeff Bezos flew into space on Tuesday’s Blue Origin spacecraft, New Shepard, marking a historic moment in space travel. Amazon founder Bezos announced a $ 100 million award for “courage and courtesy” after his death back to the planet.

This award is given to leaders who engage the public in addressing the challenges facing humanity.

The first two “Courage and Civility” awards were given to American political commentator Van Jones and celebrity chef José Andrés. Each of the award winners will receive a sum of 100 million US dollars.

Speaking at a press conference on the success of his company’s Blue Origin company’s first passenger space flight, Jeff Bezos said Van Jones and José Andrés could either donate the prize money to a charitable organization or share it among several if they wanted.

The Amazon founder also said that more of these awards could be given to others in the future.

Who is José Andrés?

The Spanish chef José Andrés (52) is considered a leading humanist worldwide. As a New York Times bestselling author and television star, Andrés is perhaps best known as the mind behind World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit he founded in 2010.

World Central Kitchen works with charities around the world to provide meals to victims of natural disasters. It also aims to put an end to world hunger through innovative solutions and the involvement of local chefs.

José Andrés was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for the second time in 2018.

Who is Van Jones?

Van Jones, 52, is a well-respected television host and writer who hosts the Van Jones Show and the Redemption Project on CNN. Jones is also a three-time bestselling author for the New York Times and was special advisor to then-US President Barack Obama in 2009.

Hailed as a criminal justice reformer, Jones founded a number of nonprofits, the most significant of which is The Dream Corps. The Dream Corps is an incubator that supports powerful ideas and innovations to “empower and empower the most vulnerable in society”.

Van Jones also won an Emmy in 2020 for the digital series The Messy Truth in VR.
