SHAPOVALOV LET YOURSELF FROM 36 UNFORCED MISTAKES

Djokovic was not at his peak on Friday and Denis Shapovalov showed highlights throughout the game, which spanned 2 hours and 44 minutes. At some points, it seemed like Shapovalov was jeopardizing Djokovic’s perfect Grand Slam record this season, but the Serb taught the young southpaw to move up at crucial moments.

Shapovalov started the semifinals by breaking Djokovic’s serve and serving for the first set but was unable to finish the set. The first set went to a tie-break and Shapovalov, who was playing his first Grand Slam singles semi-final, couldn’t even score a point on his serve.

Shapovalov did not drop his head and continued his aggressive style. He hit that one-handed backhand and made Djokovic work hard in the Serb’s service games.

But Djokovic showed his class and broke Shapovalov in the decisive final game. The third set followed a similar pattern as Djokovic had to walk around before holding his first service game in the third set.

Djokovic managed to keep up with Shapovalov, however, frustrating the Canadian who made 36 casual mistakes with a clear defeat compared to the world’s number 1 15.
