Your work should shine, not you: PM Modi to new ministers at Cabinet meet

Chair of the first meeting of the new union cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told ministers Thursday their efforts should be to make their work shine, instead of them, sources privy to the meeting told India Today TV.

Sources said the prime minister had also advised ministers to avoid “unnecessary statements” in the media and to focus their energies on ministerial work.

“The Prime Minister has asked the new ministers to meet their predecessors and learn from their experiences. He said those who are no longer part of the cabinet have contributed and the newcomers can learn from them, “said a source privy to the meeting.

More than 10 ministers resigned before the cabinet reshuffle and expansion on Wednesday. These include Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, IT and Legal Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

The Prime Minister also reportedly urged all ministers to be on time and to reach their offices by 9:30 a.m.

Regarding the Covid-19 situation, PM Modi reportedly said pictures of people dropping their guards and disregarding Covid protocols are a cause for concern.

“It’s not a pleasant sight and should frighten us,” he is said to have told the cabinet.

The prime minister said while vaccination coverage and testing facilities are increased regularly, there should be no room for negligence or complacency.

According to PTI news agency, the prime minister said that with fewer Covid-19 cases now compared to recent months, people may want to take a trip. However, everyone must keep in mind that the Covid-19 threat is far from over, he allegedly said.

According to the report, which was based on unnamed sources, the prime minister said the aim of ministers should not be to stir up fear, but rather to urge people to continue to take all possible precautions.
