India made a strong statement on the opening day of their five test series in England by giving a strong response to the hosts’ first innings result at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.
In response to England’s first innings of 183, India hit 21 without losing a wicket in 13 overs to reduce the Day 1 deficit to 162 runs through stumps.
The new opening pair, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, slapped the moving ball with caution in the final hour of the final session to put India in the driver’s seat.

But they both know that the job will be tougher on the second day. Rohit was unbeaten at 9, Rahul wasn’t knocked out at 9 at the other end when the referees called for stumps.
Earlier Wednesday, England’s decision to hit first backfired when they were thrown for 183 in 65.4 overs, the third-lowest total any team has scored on the first day of a friendly against India outside of Asia.
Four of their batsmen got out without counting, a first for England against India in testinnings on home soil.
Rory Burns, Dan Lawrence, Jos Buttler and Ollie Robinson were sent to pack by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur before they could even open their accounts in Nottingham.
Bumrah finished as the standout bowler for India with 4 wickets for 46 runs, while Shami finished 3 for 28 and Shardul 2 for 41 in just 13 overs.
The English captain Joe Root was the only batsman who could handle the pace and momentum of the Indian speedsters.
Root scored his 50th fifty in format and landed 64 runs at 108 balls while Jonny Bairstow, 29, Zak Crawley, 27 and Sam Curran (27 failed) made it to the twenties but the rest failed miserably against the Indian Tempo trio.
