Assam’s Cachar district declares Mizoram border no-drone zone citing security threat


A few days after a violent clash between police forces from two northeastern neighbors, the Assam district administration declared the border area of ​​the Sonai revenue district to Mizoram a no-fly zone for drones on Tuesday.

District Judge Keerthi Jalli ordered it to be issued “in view of the security threats from recent drone strikes by various villains and anti-social elements that can endanger human life, property and public breaches of peace and quiet.”

The order issued under Section 144 of the CrPC did not mention when the “drone strikes” took place, but official sources claimed that drones had recently flown in from Kolasib district across the state border.

The order takes effect immediately.

The authorities in the Kolasib district of Mizoram also declared the interstate border a no-fly zone on July 30.

That Clash between police forces of the two states In the disputed border area, seven people died on July 26 – six members of the Assam police and one civilian – and over 50 others were injured, prompting the central government to intervene.

The Cachar District Magistrate’s order stated that flying drones and other unnamed aircraft (UAVs) is strictly prohibited in border areas under the Sonai Revenue Circle.

Any government activity, private or military, with drones or UAVs in the airspace within the site is not allowed without special permission from the district judge of Cachar, it said.

Meanwhile, the situation along the Assam-Mizoram border remained peaceful, with central forces patrolling the border while police remained in their respective states, officials said.

The economic blockade imposed by some organizations in the border areas in Assam has been lifted, but trucks carrying goods remain stranded on National Highway 306, which leads to the neighboring state, as truckers fear a lack of adequate security.

Meanwhile, Assam’s two cabinet ministers, Atul Bora and Ashok Singhal, were due to visit Aizawl on August 5 to discuss the ongoing border dispute between the two states.

The situation should improve with The Prime Ministers of both states demand that the proceedings against officials of the other state be withdrawn.

The FIR registered in Mizoram against the Prime Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, would also be withdrawn, the authorities said.
