Delhi police summoned BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay in connection with the communal slogans near Jantar Mantar on Sunday. The matter will be handled in accordance with the law and no attempts will be tolerated to spread community disharmony, Delhi police said.
The matter first came to light when several social media users shared videos of communal slogans that occurred during a Event near Jantar Mantar On Sunday. These videos feature men raising slogans against a particular community.
Aware of the videos on social media, the Delhi police have now opened an investigation into the matter after registering an FIR against unknown persons.
Delhi police open investigation
Ashwini Upadhyay was asked to appear at Connaught Place Police Station for questioning. Sources say others on police radar are Uttam Malik, Vinit Kranti and Pinki Bhaiya.
Sources also say Ashwini Upadhyay could be arrested in connection with the case. Officials familiar with the case said on condition of anonymity that The Delhi Police Commissioner, Rakesh Asthana has ordered the officers to take strict measures against those responsible in this case.
In a video he posted on Twitter on Monday, Ashwini Upadhyay said he had filed a complaint with the Delhi Police in connection with the incident near Jantar Mantar.

“If this video is legitimate, tough action should be taken against those featured in the viral video,” added Ashwini Upadhyay. He went on to claim that he had never met or invited the men seen in the viral videos raising communal slogans, and that they only behaved questionably after the program he had organized ended.
Ashwini Upadhyay is writing to the Delhi Police Commissioner
BJP boss Ashwini Upadhyay also wrote to the Delhi police commissioner on Monday.
In his letter, Upadhyay wrote that a program was organized near Jantar Mantar by the Save India Foundation on Monday. The purpose of this event was to call on the central government to repeal all “colonial laws” before the 75th Independence Day in 2022.
Ashwini Upadhyay added that the event started at 11 a.m. and ended at noon after speeches from RVS Mani, Firoz Bakht Ahmed, Lieutenant General Vishnu Kant Chaturvedi and Gajendra Chauhan, among others.
“A video is now going viral on social media in which a person gives a hateful speech and some people defame me on Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, even though I don’t know the people or have never met the video; I don’t even have these people too invited to the event, “wrote Ashwini Upadhyay.
He also called on the Delhi Police Commissioner to take tough measures against the men who had raised communal slogans in the viral videos.
“Videos hurt the feelings of the Muslim community”
The National Minorities Commission on Monday called on the Deputy Police Commissioner of Delhi to notify the commission of the municipal slogans raised near Jantar Mantar.
“The same has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. They are instructed to be present at the commission on August 10, 2021 at 12 noon,” the commission wrote.
According to the letter, the Delhi police were asked to notify the commission of measures taken against those who used communal slogans in the viral videos.
