The alleged rape, murder and forced cremation of a nine-year-old girl in the village of Nangal in Delhi’s Cantonment district has sparked outrage from several political parties calling for strict measures to be taken against the defendants.
Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced a judicial investigation and Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family. Congress, meanwhile, called for an accelerated investigation into the case and the death penalty for the perpetrators.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has also opened an investigation into the incident and subpoenaed city police after the girl’s parents alleged that she was raped and her body was forcibly cremated by a crematorium priest who falsely claimed she was electrocuted was killed.
The defendant allegedly told her parents that calling in the police would only make matters more difficult.
Timeline of events
–5:30 p.m. on Sunday (August 1st): The girl informs her mother that she wants to get cold water from the water cooler of the Old Nangal crematorium.
–6:00 p.m. on Sunday (August 1st): Her mother receives a call from the priest of the crematorium, Radhe Shyam. Once there, the mother sees the corpse lying on a bench, with burns on the left hand, from the fingertips to the elbow, and also on the face.
The priest asks the victim’s mother not to inform the police, as this would eventually lead to an autopsy where her organs would be stolen.
Later, one of the defendants, who is present in the crematorium, rides a scooter to pick up the victim’s father. Then around 200 villagers gather in the crematorium.

–10:00 p.m. on Sunday (August 1st): The victim’s mother returns home and informs the police about the incident, whereupon a forensic team collects samples on site.
Since the body was cremated before the forensics experts arrived, they could only find the ankle, some parts of the lungs, and the heart. The samples were sent to a panel of three doctors for examination.
–1.30 a.m. on Monday (August 2nd): The victim’s mother is taken to the police station.
However, police said they did not mention sexual assault in their complaint under Section 165 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
– The victim’s mother then met members of the SC / ST panel around 6 p.m. on Monday, whereupon she went to the police about alleged sexual assault.
After the victim’s mother later alleged sexual assault, sections on gang rape, murder, attempted murder, POCSO, SC / ST Act have also been added to the existing FIR, which includes sections 304 (culpable homicide), 342 (punishment for wrongful detention), 201 (Causing the disappearance of evidence) and 34 (acts of multiple people to promote common intent) of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC).

The Delhi police have informed the district judge of the state of the investigation. The case is being overseen by an officer of the AKP rank.
In the meantime, the Delhi Police have been asked to respond to two communications from the National Commission for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (NCPCR) and the Delhi Commission on Women (DCW) relating to the matter.
